The rest of the nation discovered them at the 1988 Grammy Awards, when they blew away the awards show audience with the joyous Spread Love and amazingly won Grammies for both best Jazz AND best Gospel group. Equally incredibly, following the show the Take 6 album shot to the top 10 of Jazz, Gospel, Contemporary Christian and Soul charts, while also hitting the top 100 on the Pop charts. Take 6 has amassed a total of nine Grammys and eight Dove awards, as well as topping the Downbeat Magazine's Reader's and Critic's poll for seven years' consecutively as the best jazz vocal ensemble (a cappella) on the planet! The special music event is billed as An Evening of Traditional Jazz. Freddy Cole does not apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat King Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities. He plays the piano, sings and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat King Cole. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. And, he has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. FREDDY COLE'S career continues to ascend as he has moved into the front ranks of America's homegrown art form (Jazz), with a style and musical sophistication all his own. Just recently, Freddy Cole was among the jazz luminaries who were a part of the inaugural opening of New York City's brand new edifice to jazz, Jazz at Lincoln Center. Mr. Cole performed in the new Rose Theatre, along with jazz vocalist, Dianne Reeves. We are delighted to pay tribute to Oklahomas own Steve Wilkerson and Andrea Baker, both of whom are extraordinary jazz artists. Steve is known around the world as a saxophone and clarinet virtuoso. He is a full professor of jazz at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA., and he is also a much sought after educator and clinician. Andrea is one of the top female jazz singers in Los Angeles, C.A., and the world-renowned jazz critic, Leonard Feather, compared her to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Her multi-faceted skills keep her in high demand for jazz clinics, both vocal and instrumental. These two graduates of the University of Tulsa continue to let their talents speak for themselves. You will not want to miss Steve, Andrea and FREDDY COLE in concert.
